And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’

Systematic Discipleship at Vista Grande

Vista Grande Church seeks to obey the great commission command to make disciples by constantly implementing three things into our church life:

  1. Discipleship Principles from scripture
  2. Discipleship Practices for our local Church based upon the principles as well as practical experience in our specific situation
  3. Discipleship Promotion and leadership which involves consistently encouraging participation in the Church’s Practices in order to equip members for the ministry

Goal: To provide a comprehensive system to more effectively equip all members of VGC to consistent, lifelong spiritual growth and commitment.

Discipleship Principles

Discipleship is living in union with Christ and growing in conformity to his image as the Spirit transforms the disciple from the inside out. It is the Spirit driven process of growth from spiritual birth to maturity that ends in the glorification of the one God has purposed to save.
— Equipping Team, Watermark Church

Discipleship is:

  • The Mission of the Church (Matt 28:18-20)
  • The Christian Life
  • Relational (Jn 17:3)
  • A Call to follow Jesus in the Kingdom life and journey with Him (Mt 16:24-26; 2 Cor 3:18)
  • A lifelong process

Discipleship myths.  Discipleship is not:

  • Only for the “truly committed”
  • Simply a transfer of knowledge
  • A specific program or method
